The word "rhinoceros" comes from the Greek words rhino, meaning "nose", and ceros, meaning "horn" White rhinos are named after the Afrikaans word wyd, which means "wide" and describes their mouth. Black rhinos are actually gray, but they appear black due to the dark mud in their wallows. Rhinos have an excellent memory and can remember individuals and locations for years. Rhinos are threatened by poaching for their horns, habitat loss, and human-wildlife conflict.
